Student-athletes from B.M.C. Durfee, New Bedford, and Brockton High Schools came together this week — not for competition, but for conversation — at the 2nd Annual Big 3 Sportsmanship Summit, where the focus was on mental health.
Hosted by the Durfee Athletics Department, about 75 student-athletes were invited to take part in the event, an initiative created by the three schools’ athletic directors to bring students together around important conversations about mental health, sportsmanship, and overcoming adversity. Student-athletes can sometimes be at higher risk for mental health challenges due to performance pressure, injuries, demanding schedules, and the expectations that come with competing at a high level.
The summit featured guest speaker Kaleb Joseph, a former professional basketball player who shared his story, speaking honestly and openly about personal struggles and the importance of asking for help.
The event was made possible thanks to support from the Love Hard Tyler Joseph Leonard Foundation, which has been working since 2022 to raise awareness about mental health through sponsored speaking events and programs for young people.
